GTA small business grants and loans (2026): what is real, what is open

Grants are small and competitive; loans do the heavy lifting. Here is what GTA municipalities, Ontario and Ottawa actually offer, checked against the official pages.

At a glance: most GTA grants top out around $5,000 to $24,000 and many intakes are closed until the next round. For leasing premises or buying a business, financing usually comes from a bank loan under the Canada Small Business Financing Program, BDC, or Futurpreneur for founders under 40. Use grants as a bonus, not the plan.

Starter Company Plus: up to $5,000 through your local small business centre

Ontario funds Starter Company Plus through municipal small business centres. It combines training and mentorship with a grant of up to $5,000, and you contribute 25% (about $1,250) in cash or approved in-kind.

Storefront and space grants for commercial tenants and owners

Toronto Commercial Façade Improvement Grant: covers half of eligible exterior improvements, up to $12,500, plus up to $2,500 for accessibility. Owners or tenants with the owner’s permission can apply for street-level commercial buildings. Applications are currently closed.Toronto Commercial Space Renovation Grant: up to $20,000 on $40,000 of improvements, plus up to $4,000 for accessibility, for street-level commercial space including vacant storefronts. Tenants need the owner’s written permission. Applications are currently closed.Brampton Central Area Community Improvement Plan: the façade improvement, building improvement and sign permit fee programs are listed as open for the historic downtown core. Amounts are set in the program guidelines; ask the City before you design the work.

Practical point for tenants: put grant permission and who receives the money into the lease negotiation. A landlord that agrees to co-sign an application is giving you real value.

Loans that actually fund a lease or a purchase

Canada Small Business Financing Program (CSBFP): loans through your own bank, partly guaranteed by the federal government. Term loans can go up to $1 million (with lower limits for equipment, leaseholds and working capital) and can fund an asset purchase of a going concern; share purchases are not eligible. Ask your lender for current terms rather than relying on a published guarantee percentage.BDC: lends alongside or instead of banks, including acquisition financing. Pricing is individual to your file.Futurpreneur (age 18 to 39): up to $25,000 from Futurpreneur plus up to $50,000 from BDC, interest-only for the first year, with mandatory two-year mentorship.

How to stack this for a real deal

  • Pick the premises or the business first; most programs care where you operate.
  • Line up the main loan (bank under CSBFP, BDC, or Futurpreneur) before counting on any grant.
  • Apply to the local Starter Company Plus intake if you qualify, and note the deadline.
  • For storefront work, ask the landlord to support a façade or renovation grant in writing.
  • Keep 3+ months of working capital outside all of the above.
